On the eve of the first Sabbath of the 59th General Conference Session, The Honorable Kasim Reed, mayor of Atlanta, welcomed more than 35,000 assembled attendees to the city.  In his statement Reed applauded the Adventist Church for their work to improve the lives of people in the world. “Adventist don’t just talk about the Bible, you live it,” he stated.

Reed, the 59th mayor of Atlanta, was presented an award for his outstanding service to the city of Atlanta, which is home to more than 22,000 Seventh-day Adventists and the home of the Southern Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.  Reed is the fifth African American to serve as mayor.

More than 70,000 members of the Adventist church will pump 80 million dollars into the city of Atlanta during the session which is scheduled for June 23 to July 3.

The 59th General Conference Session is a business meeting of the global Seventh-day Adventist Church. Occurring every five years, General Conference Session gathers representatives from the church around the world to elect leadership and determine the focus of mission. The Seventh-day Adventist Church is a mainline protestant denomination with over 17 million members in 205 nations around the world. The Church's headqarters is in Silver Spring, Md.
