Dr. Michael Kwaku Agyei Owusu was born in Kumasi, Ghana where he received his preparatory education. He earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theology with minor in Biblical Languages and History from West Indies College (now Northern Caribbean University). He also holds a Master of Divinity and a Doctor of Ministry with a specialization in Youth and Young Adult Ministry from the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan.
It was at West Indies College that he met his wife of 24 years, the former Brenda Minnis of Freeport, Bahamas. Dr. Brenda Owusu is a career nurse, nurse administrator, a board certified Nurse Practitioner, and currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies. God has blessed their union with one son, Michael Kwaku Adom Owusu, a freshman at Oakwood University.
Over the course of his ministry, Dr. Owusu has had the privilege of serving and preaching in Ghana, Liberia, Jamaica, the Bahamas and St. Lucia. From 1989 to 1991 while completing the Master of Divinity degree, He served as Associate Pastor for Youth Ministries at the Ghana Church in Chicago, Illinois. He moved to South Florida in 1991 where he served from 1992 to 1994 as Associate Pastor of the Bonita Springs Church. He joined the pastoral staff of the Southeastern Conference of in 1995 after playing a leading role in November of 1994 in founding the Golden Gate Church in Naples, Florida.
During his tenure at the Golden Gate Church, he led the members in establishing an Adventist presence among the English speaking population of Immokalee, Florida. He also played an instrumental role (alongside Pastor O. E. Gordon) in the establishment of the Faith Church in Port Charlotte, Florida. He served as pastor of Faith Church from August 1997 to January 1998. In addition to his pastoral responsibilities, Dr. Owusu served as an Academic Advising Specialist at the Naples Campus of Edison College (now Florida Southwestern State College) from 1995 to 2002.
In November 2002, Dr. Owusu assumed the pastorate of the Mount Olive (Quincy, Florida) and the Fellowship (Tallahassee, Florida) churches. In 2004 he was reassigned from the Mount Olive Church to the Ephesus Church (Bainbridge, Georgia). He served as pastor of the Fellowship and Ephesus churches until September of 2012. From 2012 to 2016, Dr. Owusu served as the pastor of the Perrine Church and school in Miami, Florida.
Dr. Owusu has served Southeastern in several capacities including the: Constitution and By-Laws Committee (2004-present), Executive Committee (2008-2012), Building Committee (2012-present), and Board of Education (2012-present).
His favorite Bible text is 1 Timothy 6:6-8: “Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content” (NKJV).
